Cannabinoids

Ooh, Cannabis!?  No, not exactly.  While Cannabis is a cannabinoid (CB), cannabinoids are not just that.  They are actually present in our own bodies, and are part of what we call the endocannabinoid system.  We have CB receptors that are activated by different means.  For instance, when we do heavy exercise or run for a long time, we get a “high” from that activity.  That sensation comes from our own body’s internal CB system.  Though there are only two known human CB receptors to date (CB1 and CB2), scientists believe that there are more that have not yet been fully identified.  The CB1 receptor corresponds to the brain and the central nervous system, while CB2 corresponds to the endocrine system and the immune system.

There is also a class of CBs that are called exocannabinoids.  These are the ones that most people are familiar with.  This class includes the plant-based CBs, or phytocannabinoids.  Phytocannabinoids include Cannabis and its derivative CBD (cannabidiol), and Hemp and its derivative THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).  THC is most well-known for its psychoactive effects through its activation of CB1 and CB2 through either smoking the dried leaves from Cannabis or vaping the oil.  CBD is frequently used in oil form and vaped as well, but does not act directly on the CB receptors and is frequently found in a synthetic form rather than a pure form.

There is however, another main class of phytocannabinoids that people are not familiar with.  This one comes from the Copaiba tree, and the natural chemical constituent is known as betacarophyllene (BCP).  BCP and acts on the CB2 receptor without the psychoactive effects.  Since CB2  affects the Endocrine and Immune System of the body, this makes it a perfect alternative to other oils like CBD and THC, since it does not give the high that is experienced with these other oils, yet it still offers the same benefits.

The benefits of Copaiba oil, which contains approximately 60% BCP, run far and deep.  Copaiba oil provides support to the liver including antioxidant support, supports cardiovascular health, sustains proper immune response, provides digestive support, supports proper neurological function, respiratory function, and underlying skin tissue, and is anti-inflammatory and is emotionally calming, particularly for stress.

Many people are seeking therapeutic benefits from alternate means, so it’s important to understand what each product does and which CB receptor/s they affect.  In addition, the quality and purity should also be highly scrutinized.
